About: Dr Arifuzzaman Khan is a highly experienced, medically trained public health professional with a PhD in Public Health and over 15 years of experience in the field. He has a proven track record in providing specialist epidemiological services, with extensive expertise in infectious and chronic disease epidemiology, and program evaluation. He is also passionate about research mentorship and education. Dr Khan has an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, including articles in prestigious journals such as 'The Lancet' and 'The New England Journal of Medicine'. As a co-investigator, he has contributed to securing millions of dollars in competitive research funding, and his work has been presented at numerous national and international conferences. He holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Queensland. His doctoral research evaluated the “10,000 Lives” smoking cessation initiative in Central Queensland, providing key insights into leveraging local knowledge to effectively implement health promotion programs. This research led to several peer-reviewed publications, including an article in 'The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific'. Before relocating to Australia in 2018, Dr Khan spent eight years as a public health researcher at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). His work there on clinical vaccine development for diseases like cholera and typhoid significantly influenced global immunisation policies. Currently, Dr Khan serves as an Acting Advanced Epidemiologist with the Wide Bay Public Health Unit at Queensland Health, where he provides specialist epidemiological support for public health initiatives. In this role, he independently designs, conducts, and reports on complex population health studies to enhance evidence-based practice for disease prevention and control. He also holds an appointment as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health, The University of Queensland. Dr Khan is motivated by a deep curiosity for disease prevention research. He is particularly interested in exploring preventive health outcomes in populations with exceptional traits, including rural and marginalised communities, by integrating their unique cultural and social contexts.
